Tour Highlights
Highlight 1: Guided in English. A full day from the mossy forest to the wide view at Taiko-iwa Rock
This tour is conducted in English. Your guide can communicate in English but is not a native English speaker. Please understand in advance that there may be some limits to the commentary given in English.
Shiratani Unsuikyo, an old-growth forest carpeted in green moss, is one of the most popular areas on Yakushima. It is also known as a place that inspired the forest imagery of Studio Ghibli's "Princess Mononoke". This is a return route from the Shiratani Unsuikyo entrance to Taiko-iwa Rock (elevation 1,050 m), where a 360-degree panorama opens up before you. The walk is roughly 12 km round trip and about 6 hours on the trail; including transfers, the day runs from morning to late afternoon.
Highlight 2: Veterans with 3,000+ Jomon Cedar ascents on the team. Small groups of up to 6 per guide
Our dedicated guide team ranges from Yakushima locals and veterans with over 3,000 Jomon Cedar ascents to newer guides building their experience. Each guide leads a small group of no more than six people. Should anything happen, the teams on the mountain can coordinate and respond together.
Highlight 3: Six pieces of hiking gear included free. Travel to Yakushima light
Hiking boots, rain jacket and pants, backpack, trekking pole, headlamp and fleece: all six are included in the tour price. Rental items are delivered to your accommodation free of charge the day before the tour.
*Apply through the form in the booking confirmation email by 23:59 four days before departure.
Highlight 4: Runs daily with a minimum of one participant. Solo travellers welcome
Because the minimum is one participant, the tour runs on schedule even if you are the only person booked. You can also leave the island the same day as long as your departure is at 19:00 or later (please read the notes).
