Tour Highlights
Highlight 1: Guided in English, to a cedar thousands of years old
This tour is conducted in English. Your guide can communicate in English but is not a native English speaker. Please understand in advance that there may be some limits to the commentary given in English.
The Jomon Cedar is the symbol of Yakushima. Believed to be several thousand years old, it leaves a deep impression on everyone who stands before it. The round trip from the Arakawa Trailhead is roughly 22 km with few exposed rock sections or steep climbs, which is why so many first-time hikers join. In peak season several groups walk the route each day, so the teams on the mountain can support one another should anything happen.
Highlight 2: Veterans with 3,000+ Jomon Cedar ascents on the team. Small groups of up to 6 per guide
Our dedicated guide team ranges from Yakushima locals and veterans with over 3,000 Jomon Cedar ascents to newer guides growing their experience day by day. Each guide leads a small group of no more than six people.
Highlight 3: Straight to the trailhead by charter bus, with no early-morning transfers
Your charter bus is arranged the moment you book, running directly from a pickup point near your accommodation to the Arakawa Trailhead. Everything an independent hiker has to handle, from the pre-dawn transfer to buying a bus ticket, collecting a numbered ticket and queueing on a first-come basis, is taken care of. The fare is paid locally on the day (¥3,000 per person, round trip, March to November only).
Highlight 4: Six pieces of hiking gear included free. Travel to Yakushima light
Hiking boots, rain jacket and pants, backpack, trekking pole, headlamp and fleece: all six are included in the tour price. Rental items are delivered to your accommodation free of charge the day before the tour.
*Apply through the form in the booking confirmation email by 23:59 four days before departure.
Highlight 5: Runs daily with a minimum of one participant. Solo travellers welcome
Because the minimum is one participant, the tour runs on schedule even if you are the only person booked, with no solo surcharge. For the Jomon Cedar tour you must arrive on Yakushima the day before (please read the notes carefully).
About the charter bus fare
The Jomon Cedar trek uses a dedicated charter bus to and from the trailhead (Arakawa Trailhead).
March to November: The fare is not included in the tour price. A separate ¥3,000 applies (round trip, paid in cash locally on the day).
December to February: This falls outside the vehicle restriction period, so no bus fare is required. A guide will collect you at a designated pickup point.

Guidance & Notes
This tour is conducted in English. Your guide can communicate in English but is not a native English speaker. Please understand in advance that there may be some limits to the commentary given in English.
- You must stay on Yakushima the night before the tour. Arriving on the island early on the morning of the tour is not acceptable.
- Please book your departure from the island for the following day or later. A same-day departure after the tour ends (approx. 17:00) may not leave enough time.
What happens after you book
Once your booking and payment on Yamatrip are complete, Field & Mountain Co., Ltd. (trading as Yamakara Yakushima), who plan and operate the tour, will send one "Booking Information" email per participant. (If you book for three people, three emails are sent to the lead booker's address.) Completing the "Yakushima Additional Information Form" and the "Equipment Rental Form" linked in that email is mandatory — each participant receives their own unique URL.
A "Final Information" email is sent roughly five days before departure. If the "Yakushima Additional Information Form" has not been submitted, the final email will not be sent.
